Outdoor Research Seattle Sombrero: Khaki/Java; SM (55-56cm)

Outdoor Research Seattle Sombrero: Khaki/Java; SM (55-56cm) Overview:

  • A Gore-Tex fabric membrane ensures that the hat is windproof, waterproof and vapor permeable.
  • Foam-stiffened brim keeps its shape no matter what happens; it also makes the hat buoyant in case it falls into the water.
  • Matching loop and hook tabs at the dome and the brim can be used to achieve just the right fit.
  • The brim is longer in the back to protect your neck from the sun; it also works to direct water away from the neck, head and face.
  • Removable chin cord with cord-lock is long enough to allow you to drape the hat down your back when it's not needed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stay dry without hat-head!, November 7, 2009
I love this hat--find myself looking forward to rain. I work in Portland, renowned for precipitation, and this hat performs as described. It is so lightweight that I can strap it tight to protect against wind and my thick wavy hair doesn't mold into "hat-head".The wide brim at the back keeps water from dripping down your neck, and the hat is attractive. You can also fold it to keep in your tote/bag/purse and it retains it's shape. Love it, glad I made this purchase.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good rain hat, October 2, 2010

I've had mine for about eight years and it's still in good shape and does the job when called on. I wear it about a quarter of the time when it's raining.

You're basically looking at a parka hood versus the hat. The hat gives you good vision but provides no air management. The hood is the opposite.

The hat will have you sweating above 50 degrees, negating the rain it keeps off, although that wouldn't be a problem if you're just standing around waiting for a bus, say. It also blows around in the wind, which by itself is annoying, but also doesn't do much to keep you dry and warm in driving rain. You will definitely loose this hat if you don't keep the neck strap tight in windy weather.

Contrast that with a hood on your rain parka or sweatshirt hoodie. That's always handy, and you never have to stick a wet hood in your otherwise dry pocket. With the hood you get good air management, that is, it keeps the wind off of you and lets moist air... Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars Still a good performer, but has dropped in quality, March 29, 2011
This is my second Seattle Sombrero. My first one I used extensively, as I do work in the field for my job in the Pacific Northwest. It always did what I asked of it; keep my head dry in all weather conditions. Unfortunately that Sombrero was stolen from my car, and since I found it so useful I had to replace it. My replacement is similar is most respects, but I noticed that these are now made in China, instead of made in the USA. Stitching accuracy is noticeably down from my previous hat, and the internal fit adjustment band was cut far too long. While my previous hat was a high quality garment that stood the test of time, I have doubts about my new one. While I have not experienced any catastrophic failures of my new Sombrero, I do not think that the level of quality now matches the price charged for these hats.
